| In the years following the Mexican Revolution, modern advertising took root across the country and helped to foster a new, united national identity by including Mexican cultural symbols on a wide range of packaging and promotion – foremost, the popular calendar. In the heyday of calendar production, from the 1930s to the 1960s, talented Mexican artists produced hundreds of painting for calendars on a range of subjects, from celebrations of Mexican cultural heritage to racy pin-up girls, covering lots of ground in between. Many of these images still adorn Mexican calendars today.

En los días que siguieron a la Revolución Mexicana, la publicidad moderna se afianzó en todo el país y ayudó a fomenter una identidad nacional nueva y unida por medio de la inclusion de símbolos culturales mexicanos en una gran variedad de envases y promociones, especialmente en los populares calendarios. Durante el florecimiento de la producción de calendarios, desde la década de los 1930 a la de 1960, talentosos artistas mexicanos crearon cientos de pinturas para los mismos con una gran diversidad de temas que iban desde la celebración de la herencia cultural Mexicana hasta atrevidas chicas “pin-up”. Muchas de estas imágenes adornana todavía los calendarios mexicanos de la actualidad.
En Chicas de calendarios mexicanos, la autora Angela Villalba se basa en anos de investigación para presenter la historia y las circumstancias sociales detrás de estos encantadores calendarios, retrata las compañías y los artistas que los crearon y además reúne y reproduce más de 150 de las imágenes de calendario más famosas, bellas y difíciles de encontrar.
